Preparing for a Freeze

It doesn’t get below freezing very much in Sunnyvale, TX. We are grateful for that, but when it does there is a lot to prepare for. The cold doesn’t last long, which is awesome, but the preparation for it doesn’t change whether you have a few days of below freezing temperatures - or weeks.

Today we are readying for the freeze predicted this weekend. And by we, I mostly mean my Dad who is always ahead of the game and with whom I could not live here without.

Here is our checklist!

  • Check wiring to water heaters Donkeys.

  • Put out heater pad for chicken water.

  • Install heated waterers for Rabbits.

(Goats will get fresh water every day.)

  • Winterize Travel Trailer (drain and refill with antifreeze, unhook, unplug, pull in slides, etc.)

  • Make sure all hoses are outfitted with quick-connects and are disconnected from bury hydrants (we have five.)

  • Make sure all hoses are disconnected from outdoor faucets around residences (we have three.)

  • Remove any beverages from Travel Trailer mini bar and outdoor kitchen.

  • Insulate pipes at guest house and under outdoor sink and make sure the heat sources are plugged in and working. (this doesn’t need to be done new every year, but they do need to be checked and plugged in.)

  • Take down holiday lights and decorations!!

  • Make sure chicken heat lamp is working and ready.

Just another day of fun!
