Edible Butter Slime

It was the second day of summer for us so naturally, I was looking for activities to occupy the children. Side note: The best idea I’ve heard this summer is an “I don’t know what to do Jar” that his teacher sent home. It didn’t come with so many good to do’s, so I plan to develop that idea a little bit more as the week goes on. But that is not the purpose of this post! What we did find it occupy ourselves was this:

My daughter was “bored” and asked if they could make dough. Mixing flour and water around here is a favorite past time, but it’s very messy. They then added that they wanted to make it sweet which to me just seems messy as well as sticky and that request got a resounding no.  So I started to look up recipes for edible dough, sweet edible Play-Dough etc. I got some weird results, but we started messing around and we ended up with one that is very cool. We discovered EDIBLE BUTTER SLIME!! My daughter is a slime enthusiast, and I would actually consider her a professional at this point. She gave it high marks.

I don’t like slime. Our slime doesn’t leave the kitchen which is relatively damage - proof, but it still ends up on a lot of my kitchen towels and the kids clothing.

This version of slime is actually quite nice because it’s completely washable, completely edible, and pretty easy to make. The drawback is that it does take adult supervision.

There are only four ingredients, which you probably have in your arsenal already.

Here’s the recipe, because I hate when people ramble on and on.

RECIPE FOR BUTTER SLIME

Ingredients:

12 jumbo marshmallows

4 tsp coconut oil

1/2 c corn starch

Food coloring

Directions:

  • Combine marshmallows and 3 tsp of coconut oil.

  • Warm with a double boiler, stirring for around four minutes until marshmallows are soft, but not melted. They should still retain some shape.

  • If you prefer you can use a microwave for 30-45 seconds until they get puffy but not over cooked.

  • Put the corn starch into a mixing bowl. Do this first so your marshmallows don’t stick to the bowl.

  • Add the marshmallow and coconut oil mixture and fold in the corn starch.

  • Add your color of choice. Just a few drops is enough.

  • Mash it together until it safe to pick up with your hands!

  • Add the additional teaspoon of coconut oil if it seems too sticky.

  • Knead it until fully incorporated

It should have the consistency of butter slime, being soft and stretchy, and not very sticky.  (if it’s still really sticky at usually means that you over cut your marshmallows and you will need to start over.)

They can play with it and make shapes out of it and then eat it when they’re done!
